Order of St John

His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester, Grand Prior of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, has been graciously pleased to approve the award of the Life Saving Medal of the Order in Gold in recognition of the conspicuous act of bravery performed, at personal risk, in attempting to save the life of another.

THE LIFE SAVING MEDAL OF THE ORDER IN GOLD

Adam David WEATHERHOG

On 16 February 2025, Adam Weatherhog (35) and Charlotte Crook (31) spent the day walking on the Glyderau Mountains in North Wales, an area they knew well. On their descent of the north face of Glyder Fach, Charlotte fell from a ledge coming to rest in a small grassy area approximately 10 meters below. Having called out to Charlotte, receiving no response, Adam contacted the emergency services to summon help. North Wales Police alerted the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team whose leader then made contact. Adam described the incident and gave clear information regarding their location.

Despite being instructed to remain in his safe location Adam, with little regard for his own safety, began to make a rapid descent to Charlotte. By this time visibility had deteriorated significantly. Adam fell some distance himself in the process breaking his arm. Once with Charlotte, he discovered no signs of response, breathing or a pulse. Notwithstanding his own injuries and his obvious distress at his friend's condition, Adam persevered in providing one-armed CPR for over an hour in a state of exhaustion, until the arrival of the Mountain Rescue Team and the decision was taken to stop CPR. Adam's injuries later required surgery.

Adam's actions, risking his own life to help his friend and his perseverance, represent the true embodiment of the values and traditions of St John.
